Canada!

Another incredibly peaceful, almost eerie night just north of Whitefish Lake. No grizzly bear sightings, thankfully. Perhaps I was still half asleep, but I took a left out of the state land thinking I was on route 93 going through some incredibly gorgeous ranches manicured to the nines, and I can’t help but think who lives here? What celebrity or multi billionaire lives here? The area was stunning, and well-kept like botanical gardens. I should have stopped and taken photos. I kept going for at least 5 miles until I hit the end of the line, a gate showing private property so there was no getting through. I was perplexed. So I looked on my Google maps and realized that I turned the wrong way. Well, it’s not the first time I messed up, and it won’t be the last. I got the scenic route! I returned to the town of Whitefish and was on my way towards the Canadian border after filling up with gas.  it was the first time I filled my extra exterior container which I did have to uninstall o...

To Whitefish, MT

My night at Bobcat Gulch along the Salmon River was complete perfection. It was wonderful spending a night here again, in this very spot, as I did three years ago. I decided to get an early start. I traveled for several hours with rain on and off. Including that part of Idaho, that climbs up into the mountains where there was a flashing sign, recommending snow chains. Oh, dear, I have no chains, but I do have all-terrain tires and, for sure, I take it slow. I didn’t stop, but there were plenty of snow patches along the road as the fog suddenly thickened. Travel was slow. It’s not a vast area, so I got through back down to moderate elevations. I enjoyed the view of Flathead Lake, and saw all the cherry farm stands, obviously closed up. This is known for Flathead cherries, which I enjoyed three years ago. Next was Kalispell, then upscale looking Whitefish, with plenty of ski resorts, and new shoreline home construction. My iOverlander app took me to a site near the lake, which I could ...

Blackfoot to Salmon, ID

Image
I traveled from Rose Park near Blackfoot up through a very remote part of Eastern Idaho towards the salmon river. I was shooting for a spot that I camped in 2020. I found it, and the salmon river was rushing quite high. It’s chilly and rainy so there are only one or two other campers nearby. I parked as close as I could to the water and I enjoyed, as always, the flowing rush of the river was soothing. It rained on and off for the afternoon so I decided to do a bit of my art carving wood pieces as back pieces for a new series. I also cooked some omelets for breakfast. It was a little more relaxed today, not as much travel, but I hope to hit the road running tomorrow morning. I hope to be in Montana spending one more night before heading over the Canadian border. I really enjoyed the beauty of Idaho along with the snowcapped mountains in green-fields, farmers, ranches, and secluded getaway cabins. It’s more than potatoes, it’s so beautiful!

in Utah camping in the Uinta National Forest, UT

Image
Well, even though it said 5 hours and 10 minutes (Miss Google maps) to get to my next destination, it’s always so much more than that since they don’t figure on the times you stop for gas or just a break and a bite for lunch. I know this, so it took the better part of 6 1/2 hours to reach my camp just south of Provo, Utah. I passed so many pristine, tightly kept little community towns. I was impressed with most of these historic looking homes, however, combined with disheveled, seriously trashed up homes. I am Near Jackson Wildlife Management Area. Day, two, and I’ve already done what seems like a lot of driving. Other than listening to public radio, or occasional music selections I do my isometrics and stretches while holding the steering wheel. My destination was a place that I camped out in 2021 but Miss Google took me on a route just south of that. It was unfamiliar. However, I saw signs to the National Forest in 1.6 miles, so I carried on. The road was pretty good gravel, and no...

Day one, Near Grand Staircase Escalante, UT

Image
Day one was perfect! I am in blm land in southern Utah. I actually camped here about a year and a half ago. It’s warm, but I can already feel the temperatures dropping, so the overnight should be fine. After a stop to buy Navajo fry bread (yumm), I stopped at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center, in the Glen Canyon Recreational Park. This visitor center was still closed due to Covid in 2021. So I’m glad I had a chance to visit. The dam is an amazing engineering accomplishment, with beautiful views. I am enjoying the unexpected treat of hardy, beautiful wildflowers. So far I am the only one in this spot, and with any luck, Jo Jo and I will have the privilege of an exclusive evening! I am near the Grand Staircase Escalante. These rich, beautiful colors never cease to amaze me!
