More of Cumberland Island

An early rise today, as I headed towards the navel base to drop off JoJo. Yes, today Jo Jo will be staying with a military family, Jessica, and Dan. "In the Navy......"Of course like every good Mom, I am apprehensive about leaving my fur baby. Jessica texted me updates, and Jo Jo was stressed, but safe, and got some good attention. Dan was in the dog cage with JoJo, I'll try to post that pic, lol.

So off I go to catch the ferry to Cumberland Island, a 45 minute ride. As we approached, I noticed sand cliffs with huge wild oak trees scattered along the shore. Hurricane Irma did it's thing. It was like a beautiful sculpture, accept they were huge trees. Cumberland Island is one of the larger barrier islands in this area. I hiked a loop along the river trail in a wooded forest of live oak and palm. It was a magical, mystical forest, with twisting, undulating branches, and hanging Spanish moss. So beautiful. I entered a park area, and found the feral horses! They live in the wild here on the island. I encountered more on the trail through the dunes towards the beach. The horses seemed friendly, but the rangers gave fair warning about staying clear. They will kick.

The tide was out, at the beach, which gave this amazing vast wide open space. Ocean on one side, dunes on the other. No houses, no high rises, no cars, just 100% mother nature. For a moment, I thought that I was back on N. Padre Island in Texas. But thankfully, I was safe.....just walking. I finished this 4.3 mile loop in time to catch the ferry back to the mainland. I am tired, and hot, and back with JoJo, writing this back at Crooked River State Park. What a magical day. So relaxing, and inspiring, eventhough, right now, these sand flies are really biting and eating me up for dinner.
