Goodbye, Maine

Well, the time has come to leave Maine. As we speak, I'm spending a couple hours this morning on a sand beach near Portland. Fortunately they welcome dogs, even though Jo Jo prefers to stay away from the water, and he likes to stay in his bag. I'll be heading into New Hampshire later today.

Yesterday I spent some time at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse Park. I was able to get into the lighthouse, a tiny one with only 40 stairs. I wish I knew more about the geology of the area, as the view of these rocks were very distinctive. They are formed in parallel rows, looking a lot like planks of wood that had petrified. At the same time there were quartz inclusions, along with a mica effect that was shimmering, like glitter. Not very technical, I know, but that's how I would describe it. Geologists who are reading this, are rolling in laughter at me. Either way, it was very pretty.

I drove a couple hours south to Portland, and found a Cabelas for the night. So far my reserves are holding up well, and I'm experimenting to see how far I can take it. Maybe in the end I will be the boondocking master expert.

I am sad about leaving Maine, and the ocean. I could seriously live here, but only during the summer. There are definite signs of fall, as the trees are showing color.
