Deception Pass

The morning ferry was already leaving port, when I left. This campsite has a prime view of this harbor. I stopped briefly at the Admiralty Light House, which was not yet open. I took some nice shots of the clear skies looking over the Olympic Peninsula, and for the first time saw all of the snow capped peaks from this island. Stunning! A doe was having breakfast. I have seen so many deer.

Just as I exited the park, I encountered some navy soldiers marching and chanting, "left...right, left...right...." What a great opportunity to view these soldiers in a historic place!

I arrived for a quick hike to the shore of Fort Ebey State Park and again on a fossil mission. No luck, except for a few agates. The internet is full of reference to woolly mammoth teeth being found in this area. I want to find one. And believe me, I have looked! This was a peaceful stop.

As I assess the future evenings accomodations, (always a hustle), I drive through the most populated town of the island, Oak Harbor, and Walmart was an option (my last option), but it's too early to stop. I wound up at Deception Pass State Park, and got a full hook up. If I can get into a state park, I am good. Now I can relax, and I took a drive over the bridge to Fidalgo Island, found road side parking, and proceeded to walk across this very high bridge. I am not a fan of daughting heights, and was focused on my walk with Jo Jo in the pouch while the bridge swayed and bounced. The walkway was only wide enough for 2 people to pass when you sucked your gut in sideways, while the railing barely seemed waist high, and the other cable railing kept you on the curb from oncoming traffic. A lot of traffic. Boy this scenario seems primed for mishaps. The walkway took you under this bridge as well for some interesting angled views of the bridge. It's a very pretty area, and it was exhilerating.

I ended the afternoon with a sit on the beach reading magazines, and we all spotted several blows of a whale. There are grey whales, and orcas, in this area.

I got fully hooked in, took a shower in the Gypsy, ate dinner, and then realized I left my blue beach blanket back on North Beach. I must have been tired from the bridge adventure, and lost focus, geez. And I can't loose focus while I am traveling like this.  I hate it when I loose things, but I could have left my purse or Jo Jo behind instead......! I was already 7:30 when I decided to unhook it all, and drive back to the beach to see if my essential blanket was still there. A long shot, right? Well wouldn't you know it, it was adopted by a family of about 15 who were barbecuing when I left, and it was still there, laid out with a teenager sitting on it. I kindly asked for it back, and got it. No big deal, if I never got it back, but I had to give it a shot!
