Salmon River, near Clayton, Idaho
The plan was to keep heading north and I went through a beautiful mountain range where the temperatures dropped to 75 degrees. There were plenty of options to pull off into the National Forest, however I decided to shoot for an area along the Salmon River. The many apps I use, to direct me to dispersed camping, is a guess at best. This direction led me to an open parking lot, high above the river, which I chose to pass up. There was 100% no shade. I continued further down the road finding a place that was a few hundred feet off the road, in the woods, and at the time, in the shade. It was a rather step climb, but the Sylver Gypsy did it, and the hand brake is engaged, as its a good bee-line straight down to the Salmon River. There was a trail across the street, going to the shore, where I spent a little bit of time, and took a dip to cool down. Whoa, the water was refreshingly chilly, and felt so good. There were many kayakers, and inflated raft tours floating down the river, as Jo Jo kept watch. The flies were relentless, so eventually I did have to leave. Were there flies due to the scat that was all over the place? Probably. I will learn to see if it was bear scat. I am in bear country now. As much as I hate to pass by these beautiful sites, I really need to keep heading north to escape the heat. It's in the 90°s during the day. But fortunately, it cools down comfortably overnight. Other than driving a modest 1.5 hours today, and doing mundane chores, such as cleaning, handwashing laundry, and meal preparation, it was a lazy, hot day. Who knew Idaho could be this hot? And, as I finish writing, the sun has finally tucked itself behind the mountain. Ahhhh, a welcomed relief at last.
