North Rim Grand Canyon

Well, I just can't seem to tear myself away from this remote dispersed camping site on fire road 611. But this morning it was 51° cloudy, drizzly, and windy, and a good time to get off this mountain top and down into the north rim of the Grand Canyon. There was literally no traffic as I approached the toll booth. The park ranger gave me fair warning regarding a scenic route to Cape Royal. She said many RVs, such as mine, have lost their mirrors navigating the narrow roadway. I am always concerned when they tell me this. But at this point, I have encountered many narrow roads. So I took the chance, and took the exit.

It was narrow and winding however nothing that my RV could not handle, I have driven way worse, and it was actually what I would consider a piece of cake! I continued to climb through an old burned forest, which was now filled with brand new growth, mostly cottonwood trees and fields. There were several look-outs until I got to Cape Royal.

There was a primitive trail to a wedding site, as well as a small lookout that was void of any railing! One wrong step and boom, Thelma and Louise! It made for some good photographs, and I was the only one there, as I took in the sights from a 3/4 view.

The sun was trying to peek out and it made for great photographs with dramatic rain clouds, spots of puffy white clouds, along with blue sky. Add that to the varying shades of orange, red, and greens with white, and the only thing missing was really nothing. Words never seem to really describe the views at the Grand Canyon.

I met a couple from Cedar City, Utah, who were also on a road trip and had never been to the north rim. As always Jo Jo is the catalyst for conversation, as well as the Sylver Gypsy. This couple used to live outside of Yosemite, in California and got tired of living that remotely. It took them an hour or more just to get to the grocery store, and also they had a lot of work taking care of their property. They basically downsized to a more affordable, accessible, yet equally beautiful place where they too enjoy RV travel. As we talked the skies became brighter and the drizzling rain stopped. I spent the next several hours going to all the other lookouts and wound up at the North Rim Visitor Center. I was glad I had the chance to see the colors of the canyon in a lot of different elements of weather.

"My campsite" was begging for me to return, as it was a good place to backtrack, and spend the night.  I drove over 90 miles in this park today.
