Yay, waking up to the rushing waters of the Arkansas River. I did a small hike maybe 40 minutes down and back along the river and really loved seeing the sparkly mica rocks along the way. There were actually several spots that would’ve been a good swimming hole, protected from the rapids, just beyond the shoreline. But it was still too early in the morning to think about a swim while wearing a windbreaker. It’s probably only in the mid 60s. Maybe next time. I’ll put it on my to do list for a hot summer day. I also enjoyed seeing the old telephone, or were they electric lines, with the glass conduit connections. So many of them in the clear glass to aqua blue just up there balanced on these lines that I would guess, are no longer used. My father had a collection of these in his barn. I wish I had taken them, as I have designed some ideas for outdoor garden sculpture using these conduits. Sometimes the things that you didn’t pay attention to in your younger years, now are something that you really wish you would’ve acquired.
I headed out towards the town of Buena Vista. And even there I was early, before many of the little shops had opened. I visited some consignment/antique shops, art gallery, artist co-op, and a shop that offers handcrafted pieces from third world countries, such as Nepal. I was really tempted to find a bakery, and I did, but as usual, all store fronts restricted entry with any puppies. I wish more of them had an actual garage door situation where they could just take an order from the sidewalk. It was better for me that I didn’t order a sweet. After a quick RV wash, and reviewing my apps, I decided to take a look at Antero reservoir, along the way, and a water source, actually more like a lake. I decided to stay, as it is a free campsite! My directions took me further around the reservoir, but there was a locked gate. I managed to find a space as close as I could get to the edge of the water, maybe about 100 feet. So, I camped my beach chair and umbrella with Jo Jo, and with some great Internet connection, I just decided to chill and enjoy the view. There were white pelicans, with black wingtips throughout this area, massive birds, and I enjoyed watching them land and takeoff from the water.
I met Dave, originally from Watertown, NY, who lives in Boulder. And Jim and Jeff outside of Denver, about my age, and older, who were perfect gentleman, and offered great conversation. Jeff offered me some Visine eyedrops as I developed a really bad blood shot eye. I’m not sure if it was the continual wind or the 8920 foot elevation. But my eyes were really dry and burning, so he let me use his eyedrops. Later in the afternoon I found my Rockhounding goggles so I wore them. I should’ve thought about that sooner. A lot of the campers, younger men decided to drop the F bomb constantly within earshot of my presence. Needless to say I was the only one woman in the whole area as this is a highly sought after fishing spot so most of the men here were looking for trout. Ugh. I usually avoid these confrontations as I never know being along, what they will do, or to my RV, or God help them Jo Jo. But it does not resonate well with me as I get all the words, but I just thought they were being rude about it. Next time I will have to think about approaching that situation, but I’m not sure a solution would be found.
The sunset was amazing, the view from my bed, as I watch every layer and color transform until it finally faded away.
