Curecanti National Recreational Park, CO
July 27, 2022
I took a drive further towards Gunnison, to find a hiking trail within the Curecanti National Recreation Area. By the time we got there and were ready to hike, the winds had really picked up, and it was quite dark. The rains were coming. I returned to the RV to have my anticipated leftover barbecue. Baked beans squash and beef brisket. You know what they say about leftovers they’re better the next time around. And it was! I have met several people who hate leftovers. They just as soon throw the food away then have to heat it up a few days later. I can’t even imagine doing that.
I had a very quiet night here, surprisingly at Steven Creek Camp, with plenty of neighbors, but they all were respectfully camper friendly. I slept pretty well until about 5:30 AM. When I woke up to noise. Thinking it was Jo Jo, but alas it was yet another mouse, and yes I actually heard him get caught in the trap. That was the end of my sleeping. Thank goodness I have a bottle of Clorox with me as everything got completely wiped down with puddles of Clorox. It creeps me out that they’re somehow finding their way in and I’ve only been here for about 15 hours. I guess those cheesy crackers in my trap have done the trick. And thankfully all of my food is carefully packed away in the overhead cabinets. If they ever find a way to get up there it’s going to be an intense battle.
With no Internet access I am planning and plotting my days itinerary. I’ve been surprised at the weather. Even though there is literally no shade here and there were some clouds it never reached more than 80°. And cool enough overnight to close up all the windows and wear my winter PJs. I was not expecting that in this high desert climate but it just means I’m going to spend another extra day or two in the area. I assumed I would have to drive continuously through to Montrose and then south to get towards the mountains. But I hate passing by beautiful sites just based on the temperature, so I am A-OK with this weather, at least so far.
