Silverton, CO

I spent some time nursing yet another allergic reaction. Bewildered as I am, I felt well enough today to venture out into the town of Silverton. I parked on main street, and did some urban hiking with Jo Jo. I enjoyed some interesting shops. I bought a couple of handcrafted soaps and visited a blacksmith studio and then couldn’t help but smell the allure of funnel cakes. My grandmother and aunt did some carnivals and fairs back in the 1980s making funnel cakes. It was a part-time job for them. Everyone stopped to admire them through the window. A couple debated on sharing one, as I commented that I would love to get one too but they were so big. And, any restaurant would not allow dogs inside. I commented how I wish there was a sidewalk window to place an order for such things. And they said… why don’t we share one three ways, and I said yes, let’s do that. So we split a funnel cake out on the sidewalk/curb patio as it started to drizzle. The couple was from Houston on their way to Sturgis, North Dakota. They were already a couple of thousand miles into their travel with many more miles to go, at a pace by far quicker than what I am enjoying. In the end they treated me to my third of the funnel cake, which surprised me. These two were very nice people although from a cultural standpoint, very different from my world. It’s not a bad thing at all, it’s just a different thing, and I’m so enjoying these experiences immersing myself in each little town along the way.
