Rainbow Basin Natural Area, CA

After about a 4 hour drive, I arrived at Rainbow Basin Natural Area. It’s north of Barstow, California. It was a good 30 minute drive on a dirt road until I got to a Loop Road to enjoy these colorful hills. With recent rains it was a tad muddy and I was a little concerned over some of the really steep declines and switch backs. At one point I got out to walk forward wondering if I could get through a particular area. I did, even though the sign says no RVs or trailers. I consider myself a camper van and 99% of the time I’m equal to the size of a pick up truck. I was the only one on this Thursday afternoon. Signs were a bit poor, but I figured out the way to Owl Canyon Campground, which was part of the BLM system. My big fee was three dollars for the night, which offered water and trash receptacle, a picnic table with canopy. There were only three or four other campers here, so we all had plenty of room to stretch out. The clouds are building up and they were calling for rain. Temperatures were comfortable, but I know it gets hot here from the blistered signs found at the info kiosk.
