Day Two: Dawson City, the exploration.

I enjoyed a full day of activity in Dawson City, starting first with a trip back to the bakery, where I ordered my lunch sandwich and yet another raspberry white chocolate scone.

Yumm. Bad, but yumm. I’ll just take a bit or two to make it last for days. This bakery is busy! It is good. I managed to catch up to a walking tour sponsored by the Canadian Parks system, which took us through the history of the town, where we visited a saloon, post office, and a bank, only accessible by this tour. Our tour guide Faye, originally from the Ottawa area, has lived in Dawson City since 1976. It was fascinating, hearing her personal accounting of how the town has evolved, and how it was in the 1970’s comparably to the late 1800s. I quickly went back to Bonanza Camp, to complete payment for my second night, then returned back into town. I visited the kissing buildings which were leaning against each other as a result of melting permafrost. I booked the dredge tour, a dirt road out of town, where we could tour the dredge barge. It’s also part of the Canadian park system and I got permission to take Jo Jo along for the ride. I had no idea that this barge dredged the creek system off of the Yukon river to capture gold. We managed to climb seven stories, and witnessed the drum trommel, and a water pump, that was made in of all places, Baldwinsville, New York. I was stunned with the level of effort and tenacity that it took for those to bring whatever equipment it meant, to extract this gold. The dredge operations ceased in the 1960s making this stretch part of the national parks system. As you move along these dirt roads, you see mounds and mounds of rock piles as a result of this dredging. After a quick video of these details, I decided to head up to midnight dome on top of the mountain, looking down on Dawson City. What a gorgeous few with dark clouds and chilly air. I then headed back down to Dawson City where I was invited to spend dinner with a couple people that I keep running into. Clive and Ann from Adelaide,
Australia, along with Jan from Seattle Washington. The four of us enjoyed dinner at the Downtown Coast Hotel Saloon. Legend has it that you can order a shot of alcohol with a mummified toe. The four of us laughed about this for quite some time, and none of us decided to go for it. What an eventful and enjoyable day. I love Dawson City!
