Valdez, AK: Day Three

I woke up to drizzling rain. I decided to head back into town to visit the museums, which is a perfect thing to do in overcast, cloudy skies, where I can leave Jo Jo in the RV, fairly confidently. Entry into one Museum allowed me entry into the second, where it showed the history of the 1964 earthquake that leveled the town and the steps towards reestablishing a new town in a more stable location. There were artifacts from the indigenous people here, including carved wooden bowls and paddles, and a bear gut parka. There were displays of the 1989 Valdez Exxon oil spill, which was quite disheartening, and the effects of that spill can still be felt today, as plants and animals are still in recovery. I couldn’t help but think a lot of effort was done to strip natural resources, including gold and oil, and the extreme sacrifices paid to do that.

I stopped at Safeway grocery store, a familiar shop as we have this chain in Phoenix. However, the prices were all over the map and astronomical, which makes me wonder how people can afford to live here! I shopped hard to find generic equivalent, and sale items.

I returned to my camp and enjoyed reading the last pages of the book that I started 2 days ago, as I heard the rain on my roof. I really like this campsite. It’s in the woods with private sites and felt a lot like upstate New York.
