Haines, AK
I made it to Haines! I called regarding the ferry but there is no new news. They asked me to call back. It was a cloudy day, but not windy and relatively pleasant as I made my way to the local bakery café where I picked up a few sweets and a cup of coffee. I came across an RV car wash, but it was probably a mistake since the wand was so weak, I could’ve done better with a garden hose. Either way I got most of the dirt off from the long drive from Tok.
I parked in town and did the urban hiking with Jo Jo, visiting an antique store, souvenir shops, consignment shops, as well as the visitor center, where I learned about the best place for viewing bear. I decided on a woodfired pizza at about 2 PM which turned out to be my lunch/dinner option. It was pretty good with artichokes and olives. I debated on where I would stay, but first I stopped at a couple of galleries where I spoke to Sara Ann, and her husband. I wound up buying a pair of earrings that will be my reminder of the aurora borealis, should I ever get to see it. My last stop was at a distillery where they make bourbon and rye so I had a small sampling and bought a small bottle. It was a nice place and they allowed JoJo inside where we could sit and we take our time, enjoying the ambience, and the wood cut prints on the wall. The gallery owner told me about some dispersed camping along the ocean about a mile from the shop, so I took a look and found a spot. I was actually pretty nice with one other camper and except for a mid night vehicle, nobody else bothered us. What a treat it was waking up to brilliant blue sky and sun! I decided to stay and just resume my Tuesday schedule for the Ferry since there are plenty of things I can do here!
