Kenai National Park, and Exit Glacier, AK
Eileen and hiked another trail near our campspot. This one was shorter. We spotted a black bear and cub on our way out of our camp, while driving in the rv. We hiked and came upon a fisherman, who said there was a grizzly here, but left quite a while ago. Gulp. More anxiety. We stayed noisy and reached an overlook of the river. No bear sitings. The fisherman was at the parking lot once we returned. We talked. I told him we didn't see a bear. He said it came towards the fisherman, wanting his fish, rearing on his hind legs. Oh my. He said if we were to encounter a bear, to let them go after the dog. That thought made me ill. He said its either you or the dog. Oh god, I cant think about this! He said a woman was mauled on the trail up the road. I said...no is she ok? He said, no she's dead. The lower 48 never hears about these attacks. What a conversation! Ok, so now I was especially bear paranoid on a new level. I think my hiking in the forest is done. We are just shy of Seward, Alaska. But first a stop at Kenai National Park and a hike to Exit Glacier. As a National Park this is a busy place. The trail was paved to the overlooks, and Eileen and I continued towards the glacier, stopping at the raging rivers runoff. It was another stunning day to hike. We kept our eyes open for camping and found a great spot overlooking the river. There were 2 other campers, but we had the premier spot. The mosquitos were out, and it drizzled a bit, but temperatures were just right, as was the view.
