Seward to Hope, AK

August 11:

Our boondock site north of Seward was absolutely beautiful, amongst the daisies and dramatic mountains, with snow and rainbows. It’s near a parking area, but it was super quiet as the rain came down overnight. We headed towards the town of Hope, and managed to find yet another gorgeous camp spot in the national forest at porcupine campground. We were excited as the view is equally wonderful. We headed into town to do some beach hiking. The trail took us along the marshy edge of the Turnagain Arm inlet. The strong smell of fish was ripe as fisherman were catching salmon as quickly as they could drop the line in the water. It was a bit muddy and silty here, but enjoyable, as we appreciated the dramatic clouds. Heading into town, we met Dru, a shop owner, that was immediately enamored with Jo Jo. She offered him a salmon CBD chondroitin which he seemed to enjoy. Eileen and I laughed hard over some of the naughty magnets that were mounted behind the door, and we couldn’t leave without getting a few. I don’t remember the last time I laughed quite so hard. Next we went on to meet Sheri, the owner of the hand dipped ice cream shop. She sat down with us for the longest time as we talked about all kinds of things, and she shared with us some personal details, which was surprising, but perhaps this woman really wanted advice! We headed back to camp, and much to our surprise, our space was occupied with a tent and three people from the Czech Republic. We tried having a conversation as to why they were in our space, but the communication gap was a struggle. Fortunately, I am in the habit of posting my tag and taking a photograph of it, so Eileen took my phone and the tags that were still mounted, to the camp host. Long story short, these folks did pay for the space, but the tag either blew away or they neglected to post it, so when we arrived, it looked like it was available. We agreed to share the space, as the Sylver Gypsy backed in facing their car. This only worked well as they were tent campers and it would’ve been impossible with two RVs. They seemed to be nice people and and we shared contact information, joking that we will visit them in the Czech Republic. Eileen and I spent the evening on the edge of the cliff overlooking the Turnagain Arm River, when it started to sprinkle lightly. We were able to again admire gorgeous rainbows. It really was a fun and beautiful day.
