Bowling Green, and One More Cave

Image
So, the weather forecasters were wrong again, as I woke up at Cabela's, to torrential rain in Bowling Green. It's okay because, I was planning to do yet another cave tour, and it doesn't matter if it rains inside of a cave. I arrived at Lost River Cave, and took the 10 a.m. tour with a small group. On this tour, you ride a boat. The electric powered boat took us through the cave, but initially we had to really duck our heads to avoid being hit by the cave's ceiling. Roma, our tour guide, gave us information about how the cave was found and initially it was used as a outlaws hideout, including Jesse James. As years passed, it was also used as a dump until it was purchased as private property. Cars and all sorts of garbage was pulled out. In addition to tours, the space is also rented out to weddings and special events. Another unique cave experience. I continued on to find a candy maker that makes bourbon balls, the specialty of the area.  I found Cocomo Confections, th

I started the morning with a visit to Onyx Cave, nearby the Cracker Barrel, where I spent the night. The night is spent near a highway with plenty of highway noise, and people who need a new muffler for their car. Onyx Cave was an easy climb, and on a much smaller par than the previous caves I have visited. They are all unique. I decided to head back into Mammoth Cave National Park, just a couple miles down the road, to do some hiking trails. Jo Jo needed a little more exercise so, I set out to visit Turnhole Bend Nature Trail. We had lunch at the ferry that crosses the Green River, it was a quick small ferry that carried one to two cars back and forth, attached to cables to keep it from drifting down the rapidly moving current.  It was a fascinating view while having lunch. I ventured down a single lane, one-way dirt road, as part of the park system. A couple of miles long, and right before the end, the road took a very steep incline and a sharp turn to the right. There have been hea

Cave City, Kentucky

I am in Cave City, not Cave Creek, but Cave City, Kentucky. Oh my God, I got up needlessly early this morning. Thinking it was 6:30, but actually it was 5:30, since I've now crossed into central time. So, after breakfast, I headed out, towards Mammoth Cave National Park. Not only a national park, but its a UNESCO world heritage site. I had plenty of time to figure out where to park. My plans, and my destinations always take Jo Jo into consideration...of course. The forecast called for mostly cloudy and rainy skies, and fortunately I found a parking spot clustered in the shade. I was able to book a 9:30am "Domes and Dripstones" tour. It was a 2-hour tour into a new part of the cave that I have not seen. I have been to Mammoth Caves two other times, and have taken the easier beginner tours. This one was 500 stairs, and considered a "moderate" difficulty. We could not use our flash to shoot photographes, so many of my images were not that compelling. However our t
