Camp Dick to Rocky Mountain, CO

June 29, 2022

I’m really enjoying the roadway here on route 72 as I head north towards Estes Park. I stayed two nights a Kelly Dahl, which is just outside of the town of Nederland. As I went there daily to get reception and to enjoy more of the town including a visit to the Blue Moon Bakery, where I enjoyed the best raspberry muffin, and then a chocolate coconut macaroon. I also stopped in the alpaca store and bought myself a alpaca wool headband covering my ears but allowing my hair to be wild and free. I have a thing about getting hat hair, as it’s not my most flattering feature. I’ve had my eyes open for a winter hat and this seems like it was the right choice, and it’s so warm!

I met Beau, and Ellen from Lake Havasu, neighbors at Kelly Dahl, and we talked about our travels. I mentioned a group called rainbow campers who were planning to set up camp somewhere in the north central area of Colorado. After texting his family, they mentioned up to 80,000 campers in the forest. We both agreed we were going to avoid that area at any cost. I headed further north but not by much, about 30 minutes, to another camp called Camp Dick. I stayed here for two nights and I’m planning to depart this morning for Rocky Mountain National Park. I’m right down to the wire with some groceries as well as the need to dump my tank, still experimenting to see how far I can take it. Even though my meters indicate full, I think I would have at least another few days before things got critical. Even though I’ve had the Sylver Gypsy now for 4 1/2 years, I am still learning daily what the boundaries are, and getting quite comfortable with the routine. There is a lot to learn.

I decided to hike along the roadway at Camp Dick offering me a nice flat surface, where I could really enjoy my environment. I started taking close-up photographs of all the beautiful wildflowers in the area, and there were at least 12 different varieties. Including dandelions, and an invasive species that I know we have an upstate New York. I was on the lookout for moose as one of the campers mentioned a sighting nearby, however, I never did spot one. It was a relaxing time here. As excited as I am to get to Rocky Mountain National Park, I know all of humanity will be there as well, along with extra noise and congestion, it’s a trade-off for seeing these wonders.
