Cape May, New Jersey

I only traveled for about an hour this morning to get to yet another winery. My membership with “Harvest Hosts” allow for RV campers to boondock (dry camp) for the evening. Its perfect, because it’s usually in a field, or on a farm, and someplace were it’s nice and quiet and peaceful. I am at Jessie Creek Winery, just outside of Cape May, New Jersey. So once I checked in, I headed towards the town of Cape May. I was able to take about a 45 minute walk along the beach before heading into town. The weather is actually on the cool side, in the low 70s, and really quite perfect. But not really beach weather. So I decided to park and walk through the Washington Street area, finding a series of small, quaint and charming shops. A tourist destination. This area is surrounded by beautiful Victorian homes, well kept, and colorfully painted, with gardens to match. It’s very charming.

I put puppy, Jo Jo, in my pack, and walked through the streets. He always gets quite a lot of attention, usually by women, and of course many of them stopped to talk to me and Jo Jo. He is either getting old, or he’s just mellowed out, because,  as these people approach him, he accepts their petting, and stroking. In the past he would nip you, especially if startled.  I am still a bit apprehensive thinking he may bite them, but in the end he doesn’t. I tell them to put their hand out for him to sniff, then it graduates to petting. Seriously, he only has one tooth left, so a bite would not feel like much at all, in fact more like “a gumming.” In any event, it seems that Jo Jo puts a smile on people’s faces, and of course, he always entertains me. He is 10 years old this week! He just had his happy birthday on June 4th.

I went in to a store and bought a brand new pair of Birkenstock sandles. I had an older pair that I’ve been wearing, but they’ve become so worn out. I asked the store to discard this old pair for me, but before that, I flipped them over to look at their sole, and saw how worn they really were. Oh, the stories that they could tell. Each pair of shoes has its story, for all of us. I enjoyed a small hike in the Cape May wildlife reserve and saw a beautiful turtle.

I returned to the winery for a sample tasting of their wines, and now I sit outside of the Sylver Gypsy, as the sun is setting, enjoying fresh air, and listening to the singing birds. I am parked next to blue spruce evergreen trees, which are absolutely gorgeous.

I was just given permission to spend another night, tomorrow night, so I’ll be returning to Cape May and exploring more of this little ocean town. I will probably go to the lighthouse.
