In Maryland at Assateague Island National Seashore
I didn't mean to coast that quickly through Virginia, but it was actually a small portion on my route to Maryland, and I've been to Virginia Beach before, and the surrounding areas, including Williamsburg. So I wanted to continue on to a place that I haven't been to. I guess I'm on a mission to do as many Barrier Islands as possible, which landed me at Assateague National Seashore, in Maryland. My cell reception has been very spotty. It's nice to have a cell-service when you're out and about in a remote and rural area. Apparently my carrier isnt as good as they claim to be. It was just over a three hour drive to get here, and I decided to pay for camping at the Assateague State Park, the only state park in Maryland that is right on the shore of the ocean. It was $45 with electric hook up and a dump station and freshwater is also available. My space is at the edge of a sand dune, with the ocean on the other side. I enjoyed listening to the crashing waves all night long. What is unique about this area, is that it's home to about 90 wild feral horses, and I had the thrill of seeing them right along the roadside, as I watch three adults and one tiny pony grazing. They're highly protected in this area, and you're not supposed to approach any closer than 40 feet. They are very used to people, and you would think that you could just go up and pet them, but they have all sorts of warnings that these horses will bite and kick. it's too bad that some people feel compelled to approach a wild animal, and feed them, or pet them. This is the same story that you see and read about every place you go. I enjoyed the day so much, I am staying for another night! Hoping to catch more horse sightings. The forecast just south of here is calling for 92! I am going to try and stay cool.
