Letchworth State Park, Central New York
There was a national pole that voted Letchworth State Park the most popular State Park in the country!
It's been decades since I've been to this park and have fond memories camping with my parents as a child. This destination is a beautiful pitstop on my way towards Rochester. I was able to get a campsite right inside the park, in a serene wooded area. And what first struck me was the amazing smell of pine trees. It's smelled so good. I spent a couple days here hiking on trails and viewing the beautiful cascading waterfalls. Jo Jo and I hiked along the the upper, middle, and lower falls, on the Genesee River, which is the only river that cuts all the way through New York State, spilling into Lake Ontario, in Rochester. I met several really nice people, including a couple from Maryland, on the trail, who's parents went to the same Catholic school that I did as a child. I find it really interesting, that if you have enough conversation, it's true what they say about 6 degrees of separation. At some point you find a common element. Either a place you have lived, a place you have visited, or the things that you do. I drove into the tiny town of Castile, New York, to get gas, and picked up chicken to grill at my site. My Winnebago neighbor came over to say hello. He noticed my Arizona license plate, and told me that his son works in the Apache Sitegraves forest area in Arizona, as a firefighter. What a small world indeed.
