On Top of the Mountain
I had a really full day today, with some absolutely gorgeous weather. I started at Bass Lighthouse, at the southern end of South Harbor Island. There was quite the staircase to get to the view, but a good effort for the morning. Not far from there I did the Wonderland Trail. I am not sure how far it was, but it took about an hour and a half round trip, through the forest, to the edge of the ocean. I sat there for a while, to admire. Then I headed to Desert Mountain, to a place called Jordan Pond House Restaurant. I was told about the famous popovers and tea, or coffee. So on one of the rare times, that I go out to eat, I decided to treat myself for lunch with popovers, farmers stew, and organic coffee. This restaurant has been in business for over 100 years. Green tables and umbrellas overlook Jordan Pond, and the Bubbles Mountains. It was a perfect day to be outdoors for this occasion. The popovers are basically Yorkshire pudding. Actually, my mother used to make this in about a 9 by 9 pan, and it was an occasional dessert treat that we had growing up, where she would put granulated sugar on top. So Deja Vu, came flooding back to me with these individual popovers. They were absolutely delicious. It truly was a unique treat. And for the fact that I was here the last time with both of my parents in 1993, made that connection....really, really...special.
Over the past day, I've been trying to figure out how to get to the top of Cadillac Mountain. The highest point in the park, and in the Eastern US. They don't allow buses, or RVs to climb to the top of the mountain. It was going to be nothing at all for me, or a $25.00 ticket for a tour bus. But, I'm a unique RV, actually, considered a touring coach, or a customized conversion van. Meaning that my width is just as a standard vehicle, but I'm just a bit longer and a bit taller than most. Sylver Gypsy gets me around.
Most of the time I am about breaking the rules, so I decided to drive Cadillac Mountain, to the top. The drive was a-piece-of-cake compared to some of the drives that I've had, which most recently would have been in Big Bend National Park. I enjoyed my hike, along the edge, and sat for a while just admiring the view, with Jo Jo, particularly towards Bar Harbor. Did I mention that the weather, was perfect? A lot of sun, of course, with a lot of people.
My evening was spent, yet again, overlooking the harbor at base camp. It was like watching television with the action of the boaters and the fisherman coming back from their evening activity. Just another day of perfection.
