On the way to Monterey
It seems like the mountains are getting taller, the cliffs are getting deeper, the roads are narrower, and winding, and the ocean is varied shades of beautiful turquoise. I'm slowly heading towards the Monterey area.
After spending a good part of my morning and early afternoon visiting Hearst Castle, I headed north and stopped along a viewing point where I saw hundreds of elephant seals. It's the first time ever, that I've witnessed so many of these animals, in there natural habitat, along the beach. It was fascinating hearing and watching them. They honk.
Some were in the ocean, most were sun bathing, or throwing sand on top of themselves. Most were on their bellies, some on their back, and some of the males were fighting. Several were scratching their itch, lol. There were dozens lined up in a parallel row, fin to fin, along the edge of the water. I could have spent a lot more time finding more variety, and humor here. It was one big super elephant seal community!
So my phone apps take me further north up the coast, towards another part of the Los Padres National Forest to find a boondocking spot. Directions are sketchy at best, and I'm on the correct dirt road, however, I decided not to go up a very steep incline to find the more suitable accommodations. I'm at a pull out area, off the dirt road, not far from highway 1. I'm hoping for a peaceful night, and still get to see a beautiful view of the ocean from my rather primitive, and free spot. Fortunately it was very quiet!
