On to Cape Flattery, WA
I think I'm starting to get used to the temperatures in the 50s, in the morning. Well maybe not quite, as I crank the heat in the RV while I go off for the day. I headed through Neah Bay, and wound up at the Makah Cultural & Research Center Museum.
In the winter of 1969-1970 a storm caused the bank at the Ozette village location to slump, exposing hundreds of perfectly preserved wooden artifacts, over 500 years old. A hiker contacted the Makah Tribe, then the Tribe phoned Washington State University, and in April 1970, some two months after the storm, excavation of the Ozette Archaeological Site began. It was an 11 year long dig.
The artifacts were beautifully displayed with many detailed descriptions of the pieces that were discovered. I felt like this exhibit, in many ways rivaled the Heard Museum in Phoenix, and if you're in the area, it's a must do.
I headed on to Cape Flattery, which is the farthest point Northwest on the continental United States. I took the three quarter mile hike directly downhill to the edge of the water. What a stunning reward, for the hike, to view magnificent cliffs, sea caves, and aqua blue waters. I don't know what kind of birds, but black and white with dark orange feet. Pretty. You could also catch a glimpse of an island and a lighthouse. The climb back up along the boardwalk with many stairs made you feel like you had a pretty good workout for the day. At least for me. I headed back with a brief stop at the beach to collect a few rocks and some driftwood. I also caught a glimpse of yet another grouping of bald eagles, feeding on a carcass right at the shore! I counted 25 eagles. One woman, who stopped by, said she counted 60 a few days ago. What a wonderful opportunity to see these creatures again. The drive was extended today, and I decided to actually return to the same location in the state forest for my overnight. With a brief stop at an antique store, I spoke to a woman who mentioned collecting fossils on a beach about 20 miles from here. So guess where I'm headed to next?
