Tillamook, OR

I got an early start this morning in what turned out to be a very quiet spot here at the rest stop. I'm always happy when my boondocking locations work out for the best. I got to Tillamook Creamery before the crowd arrived, and went straight up to sample all the varieties. Yum, what a great way to start the day!

It's a self-guided tour which allows you to read about the history and making of the cheese, and ice cream, including observing the factory process. It didn't look to be in full swing this morning, but I did get to see massive blocks of cheese wrapped up to be sent to the where they are cut up into smaller portions. I had a small ice cream, wanting mostly a sampling, and decided to take the rest home. I also got a take-home portion of the macaroni and 11 cheese blend. Oh my gosh, I am so in love with cheese, I've always loved Tillamook cheese, and buy it in Arizona. I will have to find this mac and cheese recipe.

As I browsed around the grocery section, to pick up my take-home selections, two little girls approached me squealing that I was "dripping." My take-home ice cream continer tipped, melted, and was leaving a trail, and a mess in my basket. How embarrassing, but a cleanup crew came along, brought me new ice cream, and got me all cleaned up. It seems like extreme measures to get more ice cream, eventhough it didn't happen on purpose!!!! The Sylver Gypsy has a freezer, just enough room for this sample and more!

I stopped in to Latimer Quilt & Textile Center, to view an exhibit featuring interesting contemporary quilt work, and I also came across a table full of women who were actively knitting and quilting. I guess quilting clubs do still exist! The center celebrates the textile arts of the area. The building started as an 1892 one room school house.

I am spending the night at the Blue Heron French Cheese Company, in Tillamook. I am a harvest host member, where I am parked next to a field overlooking the mountains, goats, chickens, and alpacas.
