Big Bear Lake to Bakersfield

I spent a couple hours in the town of Big Bear Lake walking the shops at "The Village," then on to walk a bit along the northside bike trails. It was a brisk but sunny morning in this charming little ski town. Big Bear Lake's sister city is in Austria and there were many architectural features that looked like it was straight out of Europe. It was 40° this morning when I took my walk with Jo Jo. I have heard my cousin's talk about Big Bear for many, many years, so I'm really glad I had the opportunity to see this little town firsthand.

I drove over 3 1/2  hours towards Bakersfield, California. Much of the drive was very desolate desert, and as I approached the city there were many oil pump jacks, hundreds and hundreds of them, over the undulating very dry straw-like terrain.

In Bakersfield, I was referred to a camp that was actually closed up, and the highway patrol was there to refer me to the campground at Lake Ming. Unfortunately I had to back track all the way around a river which was more like an oasis in the desert. By the time I got to the campsite it was fully booked, and no one around to talk to. I wound up at the marina where I saw some RVs and asked someone about spending the night. A woman asked if I was "part of the show." I said sure, I can join the show if it means that I can spend the night, and we enjoyed a good laugh. It was a boat show. Blaine referred me to the edge of the park, where he was spending the night, and it wound up being a really nice spot right at the edge of Lake Ming. I didnt really have a plan B today, so I am once again lucky that it worked out.
