We visited an island called a Holbox. An interesting beautiful, sandy island, we reached by a small boat with tourists from Germany, and France. This is home for many migratory birds, including stork. We had time to walk the clean, calm water, and shell lined beaches. The whole town was unexpectedly unpaved. Just naturally filled sandy streets, and sandy sidewalks everywhere. Puddles were lined up and down, and four wheel drive vehicles were speeding past. it was charming, however shockingly sandy covered everything. This would not be a place for people with ocd. We had lunch in a covered cafe, with you guessed it, a sand floor, and had time for some shopping. I bought a beautiful hand macrame headband, with fine detail, that I will add onto my visor.
Our intention was to go and see the Cirque De Soleil show called "Joya." It's what we looked at doing before we planned our trip here. So how excited were we to get tickets, not in front row center, but alongside the right stage. We ordered the dinner and drink package. We split an entire bottle of champagne. I will say that the dinner was the most unique dinner I have ever had. We were given appetizers, and offered a dried spicy cricket. I recall this tradition when traveling to Oaxaca, Mexico in 2004. It's considered a delicacy. I did accept, but I would have to complete that entire bottle of champagne, to be brave enough to eat it. It's probably delicious. I ordered the beef short ribs, and Carol ordered the salmon, and they were presented in the most unique way. Carol's salmon was put in a treasure chest. Mine was covered under an iridescent looking lava rock. It was made of plastic. Desserts were also brought in a large faux book, along with six different sweet samples. The show was amazing with performances and interactions, which included the audience. Just as all of the Cirque De Soleil shows, they engage the audience with performers running throughout the seating area, coming down from the ceiling, pulling people onto stage, and one even came to beg for some of MY food. I offered, he declined. It was exceptionally entertaining, multi dimensional, from every angle, with skilled athletes, musicians, and singers. I would highly recommend it for anyone traveling to this area.
We enjoyed our time here at the Maya Riviera. The Mayan Palace worked hard to get us to join in on a timeshare presentation. We were offered free breakfast, 10% off all meals, and tours, free tequila, and more. However we have learned that it's not that simple. It's a sales presentation which could take hours and we were not going to upgrade or purchase additional timeshare features. One couple I met said they were in a 13 hour presentation. I cant believe this, because if it were me, I would have lost my mind. They rely on people upgrading their amenities in a tier, or pyramid like scheme, to the ultimate which is the Grand Luxe. We "own" the bottom tier, at the Mayan Palace. I have heard of people spending tens of thousands of dollars to get to the top. But it's never worth that much money. This time share expires in 2028. If my sisters and I live this long, we'll enjoy it for a few more years before we let the lease lapse. At least we're on a mission to visit all of the Mayan Palaces, which are located in all parts of Mexico. Needless to say, and having mentioned this unfortunate issue, we still very much enjoyed our time here, and would think about returning again. Adios!
