Chichen Itza, Mexico, and more tours

We didn't spend all of our time at the beach We signed up for several tours, getting up at 5:45 am. We had to catch a shuttle to another part of the resort, which added another 30 minutes just to connect. Our day trip to Chichen Itza was filled with activities, and for me, it was really fun seeing this place again after 26 years. I don't recall such a mass of people, including the vendors that were literally up and down all four sides of this historic site. Of course they hawk their wares, and I only saw one item that I wish I had purchased. The rest seriously looked like it was imported and sadly, they say that many of these are imported from China. Initially I heard the sound of jaguar which can be found in this region, but they were a whistle you could purchase. Needless to say it was a bit spooky hearing that until I figured out what it was. Part of me really wanted to see the jaguar, and part of me wanted nothing to do with it. I wish we had a little more time to walk around freely, as much of our tour was structured by our tour guide giving us the details of its sorted history. There was plenty of people exploitation, and enslavement here, as the people were here to worship gods and royalty.

You can no longer climb up the stairs to the top of the pyramid. When I was here in 1995, you were allowed to do so, though I did not. I remember watching people scooting down on their rear ends because the steps were much higher than a conventional step. I also recalled our tour guide, back at that time, saying how many people fell and unfortunately died from their injuries. We are, after all in the middle of a jungle, far away from anything.

This tour was a solid 12+hour day. We ended by stopping in a very quaint village where we could buy homemade sweet corn ice cream, which we tried, and liked, and also bought some designer chocolate before picking up a fried churro from one of the roadside vendors.

And unlike American tours like this, the tequila floated freely just for the asking, as our fun tour guide kept us well supplied.
