Golden Canyon, Storm Troupers, then Ice Cream

Up again, early, and out of my site before 7 am, on a mission towards Golden Canyon trail. It's actually not far from my campsite, about five miles away. Fortunately, I easily got a parking spot, which was the closest to the trailhead entry. I headed out on the trail, hoping that I would be done with this hike in two hours, or less. This 1.5 mile trail is what I would consider a slot canyon, and slightly elevated, the entire one and a half miles, to the red canyon overlook. I didn't actually make it to the very end, because it was a sequence of crawling straight up on all fours through subsequent caves. A couple, about my age, told me...DO NOT to go into the caves. So, I heeded their advice. I could see why. It's either a reward at the end of the trail, or wondering why the end of the trail becomes so difficult! It doesn't matter, I have learned go with plan B, C, D, or E, and I'm okay with that.

I'm glad I went early, as there were few people, and in the end a few helped me get down three foot "steps." Fortunately not many of these "steps" existed,  but they were nice enough to guide me. I noticed one couple, with IKEA bags, filled with something. I said...you travel well...you have everything you need, wondering what it was that they were carrying? They said it was a Star Wars stormtrooper costume, and they were on a mission to locate various spots where the Star Wars films have been taped. I was fascinated, as they told me that it was cheaper to come here to Death Valley, from British Columbia, their home, than to go to Tunisia, or Norway to the other film locations. So at the very end of my trail, I caught up with them again, to see him in full costume. I asked to take a photo with him, which they obliged. What fun, since I saw Star Wars when I was still in high school, or barely out, and this sequel still continues so long thereafter. It was a feel good moment of fun!

I spent the rest of the day "resting" up from my three-mile hike. Three miles at one time is pretty good for me these days. Up hill. I feel accomplished, as I'm sure others are laughing their heads off hearing about my lower than low standards. But heck, I'm not that young either, and my ten-month-old knee is doing absolutely wonderful, but still, I feel it from time to time. Though I am not quite ready for the rocking chair, yet.

I stopped by at the Death Valley Ranch, hoping to get Wi-Fi, or cell service going with no success. But in the meantime, I text my people, to let them know I'm still alive in Death Valley. Jo Jo and I enjoyed a vanilla ice cream as we also picked up a few basic staples including a bottle of California Merlot, called "Happy Camper." Yes, indeed!  I will definitely be breaking into that, in the next few days, as I'm planning to leave my prime spot tomorrow morning, heading west.

I always find it a little difficult to leave a place where I have felt so comfortable, and gained a feeling of being at home.
