Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, CO

June 17, 2022

I got an early start from the reservoir, towards Florissant fossil beds national Monument. I took the 1.1 mile hike, A loop hike, which showed several 34 billion year old redwood stumps that were in this area. It was interesting watching the 18 minute video with the history of this area which finally became a national Park monument in 1969. Apparently it is a world wide destination to find unusual fossils in the shale embedded in this ancient lake. Who would’ve thought a redwood stump would be in this area when there are no other redwood trees to be found, and the ecology of this area has changed over millions of years. I left Jo Jo in the RV with the generator and the air conditioning running.  He was fine, comfortable at 75° even though the outside temperature was reaching 90!

It took me a while to find a spot in the forest in the pikes national forest and I thought I’d be alone however there is a neighbor close by. Not an issue, but just dependent on generator use, which is my all-time hated and dreaded phenomenon. I just can’t let myself go there right now I’m enjoying the smell of the Pines with the shade of these trees.
