Taos, NM

June 11, 2022:

Today was the day I headed to Taos. After my exhausting awning fiasco, I wasn’t quite in the mood to visit a town, but this was my destination. I got into the main Square and there was a farmers market set up! Funny how they didn’t block off traffic as I literally went between the booths down a very tight alley towards free parking. I felt a little bit like I did in New Orleans in these tight quarters, but the Sylver Gypsy manages quite well. The great part is that I could take Jo Jo in his kangaroo pouch, where he got a sufficient amount of stranger love. I enjoyed browsing the booths and bought fresh bread, along with a monster tomato, spring greens,  and a sausage burrito for lunch. At about 1 o’clock the booths were breaking down, and at that point I jumped into the shops along the Square. Yes, there was a mix of merchants here, typical trinket souvenir shops, along with a few galleries with some quite interesting work. Unfortunately plenty of boarded up store fronts as well. I didn’t take the time to learn what was going on, but no doubt Covid has had its impact on too many. I wish I had more time to explore the pueblo‘s, galleries, and museums, but in this heat I didn’t have the energy, and it’s always concerning over Jo Jo. He just turned 14 on June 4. I enjoyed my time, although briefly in Taos, and I’d like to think about coming back during a spring season.

I was directed to the forest to find an overnight spot. Going from flat desert scrub brush towards a pine forest was my motivation. Even though I have apps, there is limited information, and as it turns out this forest was also closed, due to the fires. I could see large plumes of fires many miles away, as I was heading into this direction. But fortunately there are BLM lands nearby which are open, and I found a spot that was very remote, and I only had one vehicle drive-by in the entire time that I stayed.

By now everyone can tell how much I enjoy a remote and solitude place to camp. It’s like finding a gem in the rough each and every time, and I’m getting better at seeking out such things.
