Redstone, CO

July 23, 2022

It’s wonderful that no one bothered me in this designated, or undesignated camp spot. However when I left at 8:45 AM a truck passed and through the window I could see he had on a US Forest  service uniform. I wonder if I just escaped in time.

I headed towards the town of Redstone. Crossing a one lane bridge to get into this charming town which was a small village established during the mining industry. It’s in this area you can find the Coke kilns which were used to fire up coal which then was transported for the steel making industry. These tiny little cottage homes were fairly close to each other, and along Vorhies Creek. I found the general store where I picked up coffee and a delicious homemade granola bar. You could sit outside on tables and watch others stroll up and down the street. I made another stop at a Mercantile before touring the coke kilns which lined the highway. There was a road where I noticed people turning and realized that this was a Forest Road. That might mean dispersed camping options. I have a lot of apps on my phone that I use to locate camping, but other than a few designated campgrounds there wasn’t much in this area on any of my apps. I did stop at one campground right before Redstone and they were entirely booked up through the 24th. I couldn’t believe they wanted $34.00. That’s the most I’ve seen in the national forest. Of course for me it’s half-price, so how could I complain. I just as soon find my own spot in the forest.

So off I went watching my Google Maps carefully once it turned into the green forest area. I started noticing vans and tents and I kept moving along until I finally found a generous pull out right along the creek. So naturally it’s mine and I’m truly excited that I found it. I hope for a magic night, and heading towards the town of Marble first thing tomorrow morning. In the meantime I’m cooking up a storm and will be taking Jo Jo for his afternoon walk. It’s the simple things, and that’s what I’m certainly enjoying right now.
