Little Molas Lake, CO
August 8, 2022
Well the morning was certainly chilly enough to make me feel like fall is here. It was 46° outside and 53° inside the Sylver Gypsy. Why did I not set my thermostat to go on automatically? Well, from here on out, I will. After a brisk walk, I headed towards the town of Silverton. It’s a Monday morning and quiet here in town as I enjoyed a little more window shopping with many shops still closed. I did manage to find a bakery and got a blueberry pastry with coffee. The pastry was delicious, however the coffee was less than exciting. I guess I’ve become a coffee connoisseur, or a snob. While checking over emails, I heard the train come in. It’s the Durango Silverton narrow rail train which let out dozens, if not 100’s of people. Suddenly this quiet morning got quite busy. It would’ve been great to try the train ride except they do not take pets, and at this stage of the game I don’t want to leave Jo Jo with a hired pet sitter. I hired a great pet sitter once when I visited Cumberland Island in Georgia. She was wonderful, and did all she could, however Jo Jo didn’t pee, poop, or eat a thing all day long. And I was really worried about him being traumatized. So I will have to put this ride on a future to do list. I filled up with propane, which I intend to use tonight, and headed down the road, not far, to a place called Little Molas Lake. It’s in the forest on a dirt road, and I will have to say it was a really lousy road full of intense potholes. I did some crazy navigating to try to go around, but in the end I had to go in and out of several in a very slow pace. It makes for quite the jolting ride and I was hoping that at least I could find something at the end of this mess. The campsites were not very well marked, and it was rather confusing. But upon studying the legend posted, on one of the billboards, I figured out a spot. I enjoyed a leisurely walk, or I should say hike, along the lake, but I went in slow motion as this is now at 10,980 feet elevation. This may be my highest overnight stay to date. I am trying my best to stay hydrated, but I feel like the Rocky Mountain high has taken over!
