Dawson Creek

On my way to Dawson Creek! I had about a 2 1/2 hour drive through very remote, logging country, where I also listened to a documentary on young people who protested the mining of an old growth forest near Vancouver. They literally chained themselves to these old trees, to bring awareness and media to their attention. They fought to restrict the logging industry from taking these ancient trees, literally hundreds, if not more years old. The sad truth is this whole area, as well as places all over the world are being harvested, at a blinding pace. I couldn’t help but imagine this whole part of British Columbia being virgin forest, as it looks like it was all stripped down at one point in time if not now then hundreds of years ago. This one woman protested, and lost her business, and her livelihood, and sadly wound up, losing everything in vain. The forest is gone. It was very disheartening, listening to this story while driving through the very forests that were actively being harvested while I drove.

I made it to Dawson Creek and stopped at the famous sign that indicated the start of the Alaskan Highway. I also visited a farmers market there where I purchased some naan-bread, and a donut made by the Mennonites. I feel like I have officially arrived, even though I’ve driven for 2000 miles. I checked into the Mile “0” campground, where I camped in a field area in between birch trees. It definitely looked like New York here, and I even saw a robin. I strolled through the town and also found the mile zero marker that officially denotes the start of the highway, and enjoyed the various murals in town. I headed back to camp, where I did the chore of laundry. I bypassed using the dryer and decided to hang a line from the tree to my RV where the wind very quickly dried my clothes. It does look like a camp!
It was an enjoyable day, followed by a good thunderstorm with rain. It definitely helped to lull me to sleep.
