Muncho Lake, BC
June 7
It was a wolf. A black wolf that I saw on my morning walk today. There was only one other camper in the large trailhead parking lot, and the wolf looked at me, or maybe he looked at Jo Jo, then took off running into the woods. It was bigger than a coyote and larger than the largest dog, and it certainly was not a black bear. At the very next stop I found gas at Rocky Mountain Lodge Resort. Looking more like a used gas station, Chris the owner, was from Holland. Very friendly using two canes to help me pump gas from an antique pump. He confirmed the wolf and said there’s a female in the area that he has seen many times. This area is known for black wolves. I asked him if seeing one was good luck, and he said yes, most definitely. It certainly was a profound encounter. He was a nice man slowly hobbling around looking, in pain, from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash at 18. He looked to be in his 70s. I went on my way in these beautiful curvy mountain roads until I came across Muncho Lake. This is a provincial park Strawberry Flats, and camping was available, as I drove through and found spot number 11. I really questioned if I should stop at 11:30 AM, for the entire day, and not make a little more progress. But I couldn’t take my eyes off this gorgeous glacial lake in those gorgeous shades of teal and blue. It did rain on and off, but I was able to take several walks and stayed warm as the sun peaked out occasionally, while I sat in the front taking advantage of passive solar. It was about 46* outside. I was within 30 feet of the edge of the water. I think this might be the closest water camp spot I have ever stayed at, and it was absolutely pristine, surrounded by snowcapped mountains. I have a top 10 most gorgeous camp spot list, my own personal list, and this spot may just have to move up into that special section. I did a variety of chores to keep me busy, including a lot of reading, and a mani-pedi. I seriously debated taking my bike for a bike ride just throughout the park, but truth be told my ribs are still really bothering me, and I feel like every time I strain to do some thing, I move backwards. I’m not sure the best thing to do other than my isometrics and stretches and hoping that time will heal it, as I’m sure it will. I’m just not very patient. But apparently I am lucky since sighting a wolf.
