Near Bucking Horse River, BC
I walked the next morning, and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast inside the Sylver Gypsy, in these chilly temperatures. I had the heat on all night long. And right before I decided to leave, there she was again, this time with two cubs. I spent the longest time just watching and even though there was traffic on the road, it didn’t seem to bother her one bit. I headed down towards Buckinghorse River, where I intended to stop for gas. It almost looked like a ghost town, so I called the phone number on the window to ask about gas. She said they don’t have gas. The tankers are delayed from Alberta due to the forest fires. Gulp. I asked where the closest gas was located and she indicated 40 miles back south at Pink Mountain, or further ahead at 176 miles towards Fort Nelson. And now that I think about it, she indicated this in miles. Did I give away my upstate New York American accent? I sat there trying to do calculations based on my current gas tank meter and what would be the best choice for me. I decided to backtrack to Pink Mountain, and I filled up my tank for a whopping record total of $124.00, and then I hit the road to backtrack that same 40 miles. Ugh. I passed this gas station yesterday with a half tank full. Surely I would find another gas station up ahead! Nope. Well, lesson learned. I will stop and get what whenever I can to avoid having to backtrack like this again. I do have a 2 1/2 gallon spare gas can, but even with my calculations, perhaps I would’ve run out of gas before reaching Fort Nelson. I guess the Alaskan adventure certainly has begun!
