K’esugi Ken Campground at Denali State Park

I enjoyed my camp at K’esugi Ken Campground

I woke up to pouring rain, and at about 10 o’clock, I made the decision to stay here again for another night. Mostly because it was driving rain and cold, and if I carried on to another camp spot, there would be nothing much to do outside in this weather, and here I at least have electric hook up for $30 a night. I took advantage of this with electric heat and some overhead lighting in this dark morning. I did some research and reading, regarding future travel here in Alaska. Finally the clouds cleared, and I took a bike ride, which apparently is my new found passion. Although I’m still unsteady and ridiculously under the skills needed to make me feel confident…but here goes. I turned a corner as a young couple was heading towards me, at a fork in the road, and instead of stopping, I unfortunately climbed too close to the edge of the trail, and took a complete dive down into a ditch. I lost momentum, and I know that if I were to pedal, the bike would accelerate, and potentially drive me over into the ditch, the other side of the trail. Fortunately, the ditch was soft, with tall, grasses, ferns, nice and soggy and wet, and I felt into it, like I fell into a pillow. Geez. The couple came running over to ask if I needed help, so I asked if they could pull my bike away for me to climb out of the ditch, and the young man extended his hand and helped me up. I felt fine, and I didn’t get hurt, but I was embarrassed with laughter, admitting that I am an old woman trying to ride a bike, as if I were a teenager, and it’s a new toy, and I’m a nervous, and boy that was silly. I got up walking the bike until I could see a straight path before I climbed on top again. It was my intention to get to Curry Ridge Trail again to see if I could see Denali. I made it there and met Sue and Richard, who were from Maryland, and enjoying the view however, it was overcast in clouds today. We had a lovely conversation on traveling and places we’ve gone, and I enjoyed the time speaking with people who have the same goals as I do: The adventure of the unknown and the wonder of travel. I guess at this point I made it through another day.
