One More Denali Stop: Visiting the Dog Kennels
I left Teklanika River Camp, and slowly made my way to the entrance, keeping a careful eye out for animals of which I saw none. But I did get a glimpse of Mount Denali, and finally an “oh my god moment,” as there she was completely covered in white with puffy clouds all around. My best shot after four days of mostly clouds. What a sweet dessert at the end of my trip in this park as I head south. I stopped at the dog kennel display and watched the dogs race around and their summer sleds. There must’ve been at least 20 or 30 dogs here in their kennels as the Rangers talked about how they are trained, bread, and are working dogs to protect the elements in this national park. It was really quite interesting to know that dog sledding is not a thing of the past, but an active part of managing this park.
I was ready to leave Denali, but not until I checked email and make phone calls as three days out of the loop really is a lot. After a few challenging issues, I used everyone’s favorite dump station, and got myself back to 100% great shape towards hitting the road and more Boondocking. As usual, I used my app, iOverlander, and read some of the reviews that were not so hot, including a stop in one place that I could’ve stayed at, but looked shady. I decided to move on another 10 miles down the road. Time will tell if the spot will work, but so far it’s perfect. Yet challenging to find as the coordinates were not exactly where it was requiring me to drive a few times back-and-forth. Making a turn on this highway is not easy, but I managed to get off to the side road which then took me back off the road. This spot hasn’t been used in a few months perhaps even this year, as there are a lot of overgrown, grasses, and small bushes. I am nestled in the mountains here near Denali, so it’s quite dramatic. And much warmer. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes are back. I didn’t even take a break for a minute to appreciate the park that had very few mosquitoes, as now they are here in this warmer spot. My favorite tool, the electrocution tennis racket, has been quite busy.
